Imagine you have a little brother taking karate lessons. He comes home from his second class and wants to show you his cool new moves. Now, imagine the stereotypical high school football player (minus the cheerleader groupies – he is his own cheering squad) who thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread. Put them in a blender. Congratulations, you have Black☆Star!
Black☆Star never backs down from a fight. Often enough, he will initiate a fight if he thinks you've looked at him the wrong way. Whatever the case may be, he is determined to prove he is the strongest. He does not yet realize that he is only trying to prove it to himself, not to everybody around him, so others tend to get caught in the cross-hairs of his ego. He has difficulties relying on others, insisting he can do it all himself. Only when he is in the middle of a fight (whether verbal or physical) will he permit a loyal friend to continue on without him, believing they can start the next encounter and hold them until he shows up to take over.
In canon, his closest relationship is with his weapon, Tsubaki, who is always there to back him up, take over for the things he has neglected to do, and sometimes acts as a Jimminy Cricket with a small voice. Black☆Star doesn't express his devotion to her outright, but is there to see to those who are watching. This proves that his ego has a few holes in it, allowing connections to be made and his boisterous attitude to be tamed somewhat. Usually, he must announce himself, forever reveling in the greatness that is himself.
Black☆Star's life goal is to “surpass god”. He proves his mettle when he faces the Enchanted Sword and refuses to back down, but not just because he wants to be strong for himself, but because he wants to be strong for others.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Black☆Star believes he can do anything and will pit himself against every challenge available. This is his primary strength and weakness; his eagerness to “surpass god” gives him the strength to face the challenge, however, if he loses, his self-esteem and self-worth drop, making him second guess himself. He will not feel accomplished until he has faced down the challenge that thwarted him and won over it, regardless of how many times it has knocked him down (Canon: his fights with Mafune).

The tallest building about was the professor's lab. Just behind it were some trees that looked potentially conducive to climbing. Feeling that a grand entrance was just the thing for a big☆star like him, Black☆Star nimbly got on top of the lab and began making his introduction to the people milling about the town. His speech was boisterous, loud, and completely centered around the greatness that was him. He shouted it out proudly, his eyes closed in self-gratification, making grand gestures with his arms. Even with all of his shouting, he could barely be heard by those going about their day and their business. However, Black☆Star was not privy to this.
With his soliloquy concluded, Black☆Star opened his eyes for the expectant applause, looking down at tiny New Bark Town. With no inspired clapping, Black☆Star carelessly jumped down from the lab, landing squarely next to its entrance. Standing about 10 feet in front of him, a small Pokémon was smiling brightly at him and clapping enthusiastically. Black☆Star walked up to it (not knowing this was his pokémon) and announced to it, “I see you acknowledge how big a star I am. You are worthy of my remembering your name. I'm Black☆Star!” To which the little creature piped, “Petilil!” Black☆Star just stared at the creature for a moment with a quizzical eye, shrugged his shoulders, and started walking in a random direction (he doesn't know left from right), expecting Petilil to follow.
